Gold mining industry comprises companies that operate by mining, exploration, refining and distribution of gold ore to the industries for further cleaning and refining purposes. Methods of gold mining include panning, sluicing, dredging, cradling, and hard rock mining. Mercury is often used to amalgamate with the metal to maximize gold extraction. Mercury is effective in extracting very small gold particles, but must be treated carefully after use. Mining also produces gold as a by-product. Large copper mines often recover considerable amounts of gold and other metals along with the copper. Some sand and gravel pits, may recover small amounts of gold in their washing operations.

Gold ore mining is a well-established industry with origins dating back to the gold rushes of the mid- to late 1800s. Despite its long history, the industry has undergone an intense revival over most of the past decade. This growth stems from gold's status as a counter-cyclical commodity whereby it is viewed as a safe haven asset during times of national and global economic uncertainty. As a result, the onset of the global financial crisis and the recessionary environment that ensued set up the perfect conditions for a brand new, modern-day gold rush. In the five years through 2013-14, industry revenue is estimated to increase at an annualized 5.4%. A lode is an ore deposit or vein within a fissure or crack of a rock, or within rock layers. Therefore, Archaean lode gold is gold that was formed several billion years ago within rock formations. In Australia, Archaean lode gold deposits account for the highest proportion of gold reserves and mined output.

Current Trends in Gold Mining

According to IBIS World, the US production of mined gold ore reached its lowest point in about 20 years in 2011, the gold ore mining industry still achieved its second-highest revenue in more than a decade. This contradiction reflects the power that metal prices, which are traded on world financial markets, have on the gold mining industry's performance. In the five years to 2013, industry revenue is expected to climb at an annualized rate of 11.2%, while gold prices rise at an annualized rate of 12.0%. The largest-producing gold mine in the world, the Grasberg mine in Papua, Indonesia, is primarily a copper mine. Gold mining has high level of industry concentration and it reflects the relatively small amount of mineral resource locations, where the largest and highest-volume producing mines are controlled by a few large companies, and multiple firms often operate at the same mine establishments. Additionally, producers have an incentive to merge due to the cost benefits of having larger operations.

Investors seeking a safe investment after the recent economic downturn have driven growth and global demand. In 2013, however, revenue is expected to drop 6.3% to $13.1 billion as prices drop due to slowly receding uncertainty regarding the Euro debt crisis. As advanced economies shake off the recession, investors will diversify their investments, injecting cash into equities and bonds at the expense of gold. Meanwhile, demand from jewelry manufacturing, the industry's primary domestic market segment, has mostly declined in recent years due to increasing gold prices and falling consumer demand. In fact, jewelry's domestic share of industry revenue is down from 2008. While the high price of gold allowed revenue and profit margins to rise during the recession, gold prices are expected to temporarily fall in 2013 as the economy continues to recover from its recessionary declines. Throughout the majority of the next five years, the world price of gold and silver will increase at a slower rate than it did in the five years to 2013. This will ease upward pressure on gold and silver prices, slowing industry growth.
