N-Methylimidazole is a colorless to yellow liquid, with an amine-like odor. It is miscible with water. It is a versatile intermediate with a variety of applications.
1-methylimidazole, also known as N-methylimidazole, is a heterocyclic organic compound with a chemical formula of CH3C3H3N2. The hydrogen atom on its imidazole ring is replaced by a methyl group, which cannot produce tautomerism. Its basicity is slightly stronger than that of imidazole, and the pKa of its conjugate acid is 7.0 and 7.4. Its methyl group significantly lowers the melting point of the compound, making it a useful solvent. 1-Methylimidazole can be industrially obtained by methylating imidazole with methanol under acid catalysis, or prepared by Radziszewski reaction.
