Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) is a technology that uses an electronic control system to simulate or enhance the function of a traditional mechanical differential lock, aiming to improve the traction and stability of vehicles on low-adhesion roads (such as ice, snow, mud, and slippery slopes) or in extreme off-road environments. Electronic differential locks can be divided into three categories: electronically controlled differential locks, electronically controlled limited slip differentials (LSDs), and virtual electronic differential locks, depending on the different technical implementation methods.
Electronically controlled differential locks control the engagement or disengagement of the internal structure of the differential (such as locking gears or clutches) through motors or electromagnetic devices, thereby achieving rigid distribution or active limitation of torque between the two wheels. This type of differential lock is often used in the front, middle, and rear differentials of off-road vehicles. It can be manually or automatically activated under harsh conditions to improve the ability to get out of trouble.
Electronically controlled limited slip differentials and virtual electronic differential locks rely more on existing systems such as ABS and ESP. The former adds an electronically controlled clutch to the traditional mechanical LSD to dynamically adjust the torque distribution between the two wheels; the latter does not have a physical locking structure, but brakes the idling wheel to force the torque to transfer to the other side, achieving a similar limited slip effect. This type of system is low-cost and fast-response, and is widely used in passenger cars and light off-road vehicles.
