Additional parameters include energy per bit (~1–100 fJ), effective refractive index change (Δn) from external fields, and CMOS compatibility, which is critical for volume manufacturing. The choice of materials—such as gold, silver, graphene, EO polymers, or phase-change materials—directly impacts performance metrics like speed, nonlinearity, and thermal stability.
