Phosphate conversion coatings are typically formed from zinc, iron or magnesium phosphates dissolved in phosphoric acid. When coatings are applied or immersed into steel, chemical reactions consume hydronium ions, raise the pH, and cause dissolved salts to come out of solution and precipitate on the surface. The chemical process creates a porous absorbent layer that is often considered a primer or conversion coat for subsequent oils, paints, and other protective coatings and sealants. Phosphate conversion coatings are often used as a pre-treatment to supplement anti-corrosion methods rather than on their own.
