

Müller-matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry is an experimental technique commonly used to measure the optical properties of materials. The technique measures the effect of a material on the rotational and linear polarization states of incident light, as well as its absorption, scattering and transmission of light of different wavelengths." and other properties to determine the optical properties of materials.
Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometer mainly consists of three parts: light source, sample chamber and detector. The light source provides monochromatic or white light and directs the beam into the sample chamber where samples can be placed in the sample holder. The detector receives and measures the light exiting the sample chamber.
In the measurement process, the incident light needs to be divided into horizontal and vertical linearly polarized light by a polarizing beam splitter, and let them shine on the sample at the same time. The detector then records the amplitude and phase difference of each light signal induced by the sample and converts this data into a 4x4 matrix called the Mueller matrix. The Mueller matrix contains all the information about the influence of the sample on the polarization state of the light.
When analyzing the Mueller matrix, the optical properties of the sample can be determined by calculating the relationship between its specific elements. For example, by measuring the polarization rotation element and the linear polarization element in the Mueller matrix, the individual components of the sample permittivity tensor can be calculated. In addition, the Mueller matrix can also be used to analyze parameters such as scattering properties, absorption properties and transmittance of samples.
