

The spatial filter assembly, consisting of a microscope objective, a pinhole aperture, and a positioning device, is designed for use with lasers to "clean up" the beam. Typically, laser systems do not produce a beam with a smooth intensity profile. To produce a clean Gaussian beam, a spatial filter is used to remove unwanted multi-order energy peaks and pass only the central maximum of the diffraction pattern. Additionally, dust in the air or on the optical components can interfere with the beam and produce scattered light as it passes through the optical path. This scattered light can leave unwanted ring patterns in the beam profile. Spatial filters remove this additional spatial noise from the system.
