
Kidney-on-a-chip is a type of organ-on-a-chip (OoC) technology [7] that replicates the functions of the human kidney on a microfluidic chip. The kidney-on-a-chip consists of a transparent polymer membrane that is lined with living kidney cells, including nephrons and blood vessels, and microchannels that simulate the urine flow and mechanical forces present in the kidney.
The kidney-on-a-chip technology aims to provide a more accurate and reliable platform for drug discovery, toxicity testing, and disease modeling for kidney-related diseases such as kidney injury, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and renal fibrosis. Researchers can use the kidney-on-a-chip technology to study the effects of various drugs, toxins, and diseases on kidney function and disease development, as well as to test the safety and efficacy of new drugs before human clinical trials.
Moreover, the kidney-on-a-chip technology has the potential to revolutionize the field of regenerative medicine. By creating a platform that mimics the structure and function of the kidney, researchers can study the behavior of stem cells and other cell types in a microenvironment that is similar to kidney tissue, and develop new strategies for repairing damaged kidney tissue or even creating new kidney tissue for transplantation.
Scientists have used a "kidney on a chip" device to mimic the flow of medication through human kidneys, a technique that may lead to more precise dosing of drugs, including some toxic medicines used in ICU. Precise dosing in intensive care units (ICU) is critical, as up to two-thirds of patients in the ICU experience serious kidney injury.
