

Point-on-Wave Controllers (POW)are microprocessor-based high-speed relays that open and close a point-on-wave contact of an Independent Pole Operating (IPO) circuit breaker (CB) at predetermined times to minimize switching transients. This approach minimizes disruption to the network, as well as stress on associated equipment.
Point-on-wave controllers are used to synchronize the connection of an electrical power source to the grid, which helps to minimize the transient overvoltage that can occur during the connection process. The POW controller uses a measurement of the voltage waveform to detect the zero-crossing point of the voltage, and then triggers the connection of the power source at that point. By doing this, the controller ensures that the connection occurs at a time when the voltage is at its lowest value, reducing the likelihood of voltage spikes that can cause damage to equipment or lead to power outages.
POW controllers are commonly used in renewable energy systems, such as wind and solar power plants, where the power output can be variable and intermittent. By synchronizing the connection of these power sources to the grid, POW controllers help maintain the grid's stability and reliability. They are also used in industrial applications where high-power equipment is connected to the grid, as well as in data centers and other critical infrastructure.
